A Place to Belong, A Future to Build
Nestled above the Manukau Harbour, Hillsborough Masjid is more than a place of prayer. It’s a growing community hub where people of all ages come together to learn, connect, and contribute.
What began humbly in 2016, with small gatherings in homes and makeshift classrooms, has blossomed into a vibrant centre for faith, learning, and service. Since then, our mission has remained the same: create a place where everyone feels at home.
Hillsborough Masjid was founded by a small group of families who saw the need for a welcoming, inclusive space that could nurture the next generation, strengthen families, and support spiritual and social wellbeing.
Over the years, we’ve offered children’s and youth programmes, Qur’an memorisation classes, women’s circles, and community gatherings. We’ve also hosted visiting scholars and events that bring people together in learning and reflection.
With the community’s support, we’ve purchased a permanent home. We’re creating a serene place where people can gather, grow, and give back. Our focus now is on developing the space into a sustainable centre for worship, education, and connection for generations to come.
Hillsborough Masjid started as a small community space and has grown into a vital hub for worship and support. Now, we aim to build a facility that will serve as a lasting centre for community growth
We started with humble beginnings in 2016, gathering for community classes in people’s homes and even a shed!
Dar al Quran Foundations, our madressa programme, began in 2018 and is designed to train, nurture, and mentor our students into confident and engaged New Zealand Muslims.
We purchased the property in March 2024, offering a space for the area’s growing Muslim community to disconnect from daily life.
Moved into the masjid for Ramadan and slowly started renovating it to make it usable for prayers, classes and events. Continued to work hard to pay off the building.
Faith. Connection. Growth.
As part of the Lote Tree ecosystem, the masjid is connected to wider initiatives in education, social support, and community development.
We believe that faith and community go hand in hand. Our approach blends traditional Islamic values with the needs of a contemporary, diverse Aotearoa.
Hillsborough Masjid is a place where spirituality, learning, and service meet. It’s a place where people can deepen their faith, contribute to the well-being of others, and find belonging in community.
